Ethics Policy

MYMENSINGHLIVE.COM ETHICS POLICY
Preamble

As journalists, we seek the truth and strive to present a responsible and fair glimpse of the world. The Online newspaper is our powerful vehicle, and we endeavor to face the public with respect and candor.

Our power must be used responsibly. Our notebooks and cameras are tickets into people’s lives, sacred worlds and complex institutions.

Our job is to intensely scrutinize the activities of others as watchdogs that challenge authority and give voice to the voiceless. Our own actions should withstand equally intense scrutiny. We should be transparent.

Transparency is won through accuracy, compassion, intellectual honesty and an introspective mission to convey complete, contextual views of our world. When we are transparent, we conduct our professional lives as if all our colleagues and our readers are watching over our shoulders.

Our goal is to begin and end each day with a primary obligation to the public’s right to know.

With every ethical scar, we threaten a delicate relationship with readers. Ethical breaches violate hard-earned trust and shatter our credibility.

To properly understand and reflect the community, we must live thoroughly and wholeheartedly in it. The constant tension of demanding a better society, while still living in it, is an obligation of a passionate and compassionate journalist. We should be independent, without being detached.

Ethics is the constant process of examining and drawing these lines. It is a communal effort, and we should hold each other accountable in the protection of our values. These values must come through a discussion with our conscience, our colleagues and our leaders, both for the public interest and our own professional education.
NEWS GATHERING: ACCURACY, FAIRNESS AND SOURCING

Nailing our stories can be as simple as phoning three people – or as grueling as spending months chiseling away the nonessential, the rumor, the red herrings.

Our aim is to deliver the facts with precision and context.

We believe in getting not only both sides, but “all” sides.

The best stories are multi-sourced. Facts are triple-checked. Issues are balanced with diverse views and sources.

They are, simply, as complete as possible.

Trump, Western media blamed for Anti-Asian crimes spike

Trump, Western media

Trump, Western mediaFormer US President Donald Trump and his “toxic” political influence may easily be identified as the culprits for the rising anti-Asian wave in the US, with the most recent one involving shootings that killed eight people, among which six were Asians, in Atlanta-area massage parlors. But there are more accomplices.

US media that have ramped up their propaganda machine to disparage China in recent years, and pinpoint China as the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic that has ravaged the world should also shoulder fair share of responsibility for instigating hatred towards Asian group, said observers. They also believe that as US society faces increasing domestic woes, racial discrimination could be an easy way for people to vent off their dissatisfaction.

21-year-old Robert Aaron Long, a white gunman, was charged Wednesday with killing eight people at three Atlanta-area massage parlors. Among them, six were women of Asian descent.

Although Long told police that Tuesday’s attack was not racially motivated, investigators said they had not ruled out bias as a motivating factor.

The latest killing has sent a chill among Asian Americans, who have suffered a spike of attacks in recent years, especially after the COVID-19 outbreak.

Philip Choi, advisor of the Chinese American Association of Commerce living in San Francisco, said that the attacks have gripped his heart and he is very concerned about it. “Now the vulnerable groups, such as elderly and females, are more easily subject to discriminative cases against Asians. Several elderly Asians even died from racist attacks in the Bay Area during the past few months,” Choi told the Global Times.

On Wednesday, 76-year-old Chinese American woman Xie Xiaozhen was attacked in San Francisco by a white man in his 30s.

The woman’s son-in-law John Chen told the Global Times that Xie was attacked while out for a walk. “She was waiting for the traffic light to turn green when she suddenly heard someone aggressively yelling ‘Chinese! Chinese,’ and before she could react, she had already been punched in the face,” Chen said.

As CBS reported, San Francisco police did not disclose a motive behind the attack and it was not clear whether the victim’s race had anything to do with the assault. They are working to determine if racial discrimination was a factor.

According to Stop AAPI Hate, from 19 March 2020 to 28 February 2021, the group received 3,795 reports against Asian-Americans. It said that Chinese Americans received most of the attacks, accounting for 42.2 percent.

Football legend Maradona dies of heart attack

maradona

maradonaDiego Maradona’s last words before he died were: ‘I feel sick.’

The Argentinian football legend, 60, suffered a heart attack at home on Wednesday just two weeks after he was released from hospital following surgery for a bleed on his brain.

Maradona won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986, having knocked England out in the quarter final with the infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal and another – later voted ‘Goal of the Century.’

Renowned for his breathtaking playing ability, Maradona’s wild life off the pitch was equally notorious; running around with the mafia in Naples, serial womanising and a lethal dependency on alcohol and cocaine.

On Wednesday morning, Maradona had come down for breakfast looking pale and complained that he felt cold.

‘Me siento mal,’ he told his nephew before returning to bed in the Buenos Aires mansion.

Shortly before noon a nurse discovered Maradona and phoned for help but he was dead before paramedics could arrive.

Three days of mourning have been declared by the Argentinian president Alberto Fernandez.

‘You took us to the top of the world. You made us immensely happy. You were the greatest of all,’ the leader tweeted. ‘Thanks for having existed, Diego. We will miss you for a lifetime.’

Thousands of mourners have poured onto the streets of Buenos Aires and Naples in Italy to honour Maradona as stadiums across Europe fell silent ahead of Champions League clashes on Wednesday night.

Maradona is survived by five children, including his daughters Dalma, 33, and Ganina, 31, by his first and only wife Claudia Villafane, 58, to whom he was married from 1984 to 2004.

He had his youngest son Diego Fernando with his long-term girlfriend Veronica Ojeda in 2013; while he only acknowledged Diego Junior, 34, and daughter Jana, 23, in the last five years, both born after short flings.

The footballer’s family have yet to make any formal comment.

The last hours of the former Naples and Barcelona star’s short short life were played out in Argentinian media on Wednesday night as an autopsy expected to show he had died from a massive heart attack got underway.

Paramedics made an unsuccessful attempt to revive him after they arrived at the rented house in the gated residential estate of San Andres north of Buenos Aires he had moved to after leaving hospital following his operation on November 11.

Prosecution chief John Broyad, speaking outside San Andres as the retired footballer’s body was taken to a nearby morgue for an autopsy, said: ‘Diego Armando Maradona died around 12pm local time. The forensic police began their work at 4pm.

‘No signs of any criminality or violence have been detected. The autopsy is being carried out to determine beyond any doubt the cause of death but we can say at this stage that everything is pointing to natural causes.’

Maradona’s body is scheduled to be taken to the Argentinian’s president’s mansion, Casa Rosada, in the city of Olivos for a private viewing on Thursday morning.

It is believed that his wake will take place at the mansion, the seat of the country’s national government which houses the president’s office.

Maradona, who only turned 60 on October 30, spelled out while he was still alive the message he wanted engraved on his tombstone.

The soccer legend made the astonishing admission in a bizarre TV interview 15 years ago in which he revealed that ‘getting old with his grandchildren would mean a peaceful death’ for him.

Asked by interviewer Diego Maradona what he would say in the cemetery to the soccer legend, the interviewee said: ‘Thanks for having played football because it’s the sport that gave me most happiness and freedom and it’s like having touched the sky with my hand. Thanks to the ball.

‘Yes, I would put on the tombstone, “Thanks to the ball.”

A hearse from the coroner’s office carrying Maradona’s body was escorted by police to the medical examiner’s office as fans lined the surrounding streets to catch a glimpse of it on Wednesday afternoon.

Thousands of fans have poured onto the streets in Argentina today, many at the entrance to the football club in Buenos Aires that Maradona had managed since September last year, Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata.

They hung up a banner with the legend’s face painted across it and of his mother Dalma Salvadora Franco.

Hidden Tips for Building a Successful Online Business

Published

on

online

onlinePeople who decide to ditch their ‘9 to 5’ job in favor of starting a blogging business, e-commerce website, or finally writing and publishing a book on Kindle are almost always well-intentioned but may lack a true understanding of what it takes to be successful in business.

Of course, it is good to set big goals and dream big, but surprisingly many budding entrepreneurs and business people at various stages of business development either don’t or can’t grasp what’s fully required to hit their goals. Sure, generating a million dollars within five years from start-up with an online business is an admirable goal. However, do you know what it’s going to take to get there and ensure that you don’t become today’s “flash in the pan”?

With that in mind, here are five online business success tips that if followed will make you and your business stand out and help you reach your goals:
1. Be Yourself!

Your business is an extension of you, no matter how big or small it is at the present time. It will succeed or fail by how others perceive your brand, and ultimately how they feel about doing business with you. All aspects of your business (customer service, product creation, back office) should respect your values.

The old adage that people like to do business with people they “know, like, and trust” is even truer today. Even with the largest companies, people want to see the CEO come out to represent the company and speak on behalf of it.

Authenticity is the key. You’ve got to be you, whether it’s the smooth, sophisticated type or the person with rough edges and an attitude to match. Only you know what works for you and your target audience, but the one thing that can guarantee failure is not being authentic.

If you’re not comfortable being the representative of your business you’ll still want to create some type of persona to represent your company and brand and humanize your business as much as possible.
2. Over Deliver

Set benchmarks for yourself with your products and services, and try to exceed them, simple as that!

This is especially important with your initial offerings, because a strong first impression may mean a host of customers for life. Just imagine the glee on people’s faces because they feel that they have got the better end of the deal! It’s your reward for having given so much value at such a low (or reasonably low) cost. Certainly, expectations will constantly be high, but that’s the way it should be.

Note: When I refer to “low cost” I’m not referring to the actual price. I actually don’t believe that competing on price is the best way to compete; rather the perception of the price should be considered a great value from the standpoint of your customers and clients; even if you are charging premium prices.

Over-delivering means going beyond the call of duty at all times to become not only a viable business but a market leader that all others admire and envy.

Remember the purpose of a customer is not to make a sale, rather the purpose of a sale is to get a customer. Make their first purchasing experience with you a great one and they’ll continue to buy your products over and over again increasing the lifetime value of your customers an maximizing your revenue.
3. Focus on Serving, Not Selling

“You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want.” is a famous quote from the legendary Zig Ziglar (1926-2012) and it’s more than just a quick phrase to throw around at cocktail parties. Teaching and coaching are known as “giving” professions, but in the 21st century, more businesses will have to adapt their techniques in order to earn customer trust and ultimately sales.

Learn how to identify your target market’s problems, concerns and issues to better create and position your offerings as the best solution in the marketplace. The better you can relate and speak to them with effective copywriting the more they’ll realize you truly are the solution to their problems.

“How much money can I make for myself?” Answer: As cliche as this may sound, don’t even think about the money. As a business person, real money always follows from demonstrating the benefits of your services and products to the ideal customer.
4. Meet Your Customers Where They Are

Thanks in large part to social media, the world is transitioning from a corporate-dominated, sales-based economy to a trust-based economy. In the past, dominant companies could count on “blind” brand loyalty from customers to guarantee steady profits, even if their products and post-sales service were severely lacking.

Not anymore. Today, there is truly global competition across many industries, and the smallest glitch or weakness shown by corporations are quickly exposed, spread virally by consumers through the Internet, and exploited by ruthless competitors. The auto industry is a great example. No matter how big the company (e.g. GM, Toyota) individuals have the power to make them fall to their knees if they fail to deliver. Social media generally isn’t friendly to the airline industry as well, but the dangers are worse for smaller businesses who don’t have the time or money to invest in online reputation management.

On the plus side, when used properly, social media marketing and Facebook provides a huge opportunity for entrepreneurs and small business owners as it’s a great way for your most loyal and enthusiastic customers to share their love and excitement for your company and brand.
5. Have an Attitude of Gratitude

It so easy to forget the people who gave you advice, introduced you to key suppliers, or simply served as a sounding board for your crazy ideas. Quite frankly, many of them wouldn’t take it personally that you are not contacting them anymore. They know that you are busy and have time-consuming obligations.

However, part of what makes success stories stand out is paying attention to little details, and calling your mentors to say ‘Thank You’ really goes a long way. So what if a teacher, former employer, or business coach has retired to Florida and isn’t part of the scene anymore. They’ll appreciate your gesture that much more because it will remind them that they helped someone achieve their goals. This could also lead to opportunities for them to feature you to their audience, use your success as a case study, and potentially drive more traffic and sales into your business.

On a more practical note, keeping contact with key members of your inner circle gives them a reason to continue following your progress and helping you even more in the future. This could be done on a one-on-one basis or even facilitated through an email newsletter.

Follow these five simple steps and you’ll surely be laying the foundation for a long-term, sustainable, and profitable business.
